Hat Hair & Heart Signals

Maya smoothed her favorite orange beanie for the tenth time, the brim frayed exactly how she liked it. This hat was her armor—literally and figuratively—against the terrifying reality of Jackson's party tonight. Her phone battery hovered at 4%, the charging cable somewhere in her disaster of a backpack.

"You got this," said Leo, her best friend since fourth grade, currently sprawled across her beanbag chair. "Jackson's been lowkey obsessed with you since homecoming."

Maya snorted. "Yeah, right. He probably just wants my notes for Calc."

"Girl, PLEASE." Leo sat up, dead serious. "He literally Liked your thirst trap from November. That's not Calc notes energy."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like she'd swallowed a bag of Skittles. Jackson Chen noticed her Instagram? The same Jackson whose smile made her brain turn into static?

"Whatever." Maya grabbed her phone, hunting for the missing cable. "I just need to not embarrass myself. Again."

Last month's cafeteria incident still haunted her dreams. She'd tripped over absolutely nothing, launching her tray in slow motion while everyone watched. Her social recovery status: ongoing.

Leo held up the tangled orange cable like a victory flag. "Found it. Now, hair check?"

Maya examined her reflection. Curls defying gravity, eyeliner slightly smudged, confidence nonexistent. But underneath the hat? She was tired of hiding. Tired of waiting for someone else to make the first move.

"Actually..." Maya slipped off the hat, shaking her curls loose. "Screw it. This is me."

Leo's jaw dropped. "Wait, are we doing Character Development right now? At MY house?"

"Shut up." Maya laughed, but her hands stopped shaking. "Jackson can take me as I am. Hat hair, weird laugh, and all."

"Bold," Leo approved. "I support this king energy."

Maya's phone buzzed. Jackson: hey, saving u a seat. u coming? 🧡

The orange heart sent her pulse skyrocketing as she grabbed her cable, her heart, and her courage all at once.

"Yeah," she typed back. "On my way."
