Hat Hair Don't Care

Maya's #hat collection was basically her emotional support system. Beanies for bad days, dad caps for 'trying too hard to be chill,' and that one fedora she bought during her brief vintage phase that now lived in the back of her closet like a shameful secret. Underneath? curls that had a mind of their own and a serious attitude problem.

'It's just _hair_,' her mom would say, because her mom had perfect sleek hair that cooperated with gravity and humidity and basically all laws of physics. Meanwhile, Maya's curls were like 'lol no' to any form of management.

Barnaby, their golden retriever, was the real villain here. This _dog_ had targeted theft skills, and Maya's hats were his favorite prey. He'd snatch them mid-sentence, mid-selfie, mid-existential crisis. The worst part? He looked SO PROUD about it, tail going full helicopter mode, like he'd just won the canine Olympics.

Friday night. Kyle's party. THE Kyle. The one Maya had been lowkey crushing on since September. She'd spent forty-five minutes crafting the perfect messy-but-intentional look under her favorite beanie.

Barnaby struck at the worst possible moment. Maya was literally walking out the door when this furry traitor lunged, grabbed the beanie, and bolted. Full zoomies mode around the living room.

'MAYA YOU'RE GONNA BE LATE' her dad yelled from upstairs.

Her hair. Her carefully curated, protective-layer hair was EXPOSED. Frizzy. Wild. Completely not hashtag aesthetic goals.

She caught Barnaby (eventually), grabbed her keys, and—she didn't put the hat back on.

Walking to Kyle's, every gust of wind felt like personal betrayal. Her curls were doing the most, basically screaming LOOK AT ME. But when she showed up, Kyle was like, 'Wait, your hair is actually really cool?' and Maya was like 'what' and he was like 'no seriously I've never seen it not covered, it's kind of iconic.'

Her friends agreed. Someone took a selfie with her and the caption was literally 'curl goals' and suddenly Maya was the cool one with the cool hair and Barnaby was basically a genius. A furry, chaos-filled genius.

The hat collection didn't disappear or anything. But sometimes—SOMETIMES—she left the house without one. And okay, maybe Barnaby got extra treats that week. Maybe.
