Hat Hair Don't Care

Maya's hair had been doing its own thing since seventh grade. Curly, frizzy, impossible — basically a hair catastrophe waiting to happen. So when sophomore year rolled around, she made a strategic decision: the hat. A perfectly worn-in dad cap that said she was chill even when she absolutely wasn't.

The first day of school, baseball practice was already in full swing on the field behind the cafeteria. Maya kept her head down, baseball cap pulled low, trying to be invisible. But then Jasper — varsity pitcher, annoyingly cute, and way out of her social orbit — literally ran into her. His bat bag knocked her backward, and her hat went flying. Her hair exploded everywhere in all its unbrushed glory.

"Whoa, hey, sorry —"

"It's fine," Maya scrambled to grab her hat before anyone could see. But Jasper was already grinning at her.

"Your hair is actually pretty sick. You ever wear it out?"

"No. It's a disaster."

"Nah, it's got personality. Mine's just... there." He ran a hand through his boring-but-perfectly-styled brown hair. "You coming to the game Friday? We need all the luck we can get against Central."

She shrugged, trying to play it cool while internally screaming. "Maybe."

That Friday, Maya's cat Luna decided the hat was her new mortal enemy, knocking it off the dresser and batting it under the bed. Maya sighed, resigning herself to social suicide as she left for the game.

She found Jasper warming up near the dugout. He spotted her, did a double-take, and just smiled.

"Told you," he said, like he'd been waiting for this. "You look good, Maya. Seriously."

The compliment hit her different — not from a place of trying to be something she wasn't, but just being seen. She spent the whole game sitting with Jasper's friends, hair completely wild, feeling more like herself than she had in years. Sometimes it takes a cat, a lost hat, and a baseball player who notices stuff to realize you never needed to hide at all.
