Hat Hair and Heartbeats
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers combing through frizzy **hair** that refused to cooperate. The humid California evening had turned her curls into a monumental disaster.
"You look fine, chill," said Tessa, adjusting her phone for the fifteenth selfie of the night. "Jordan's not gonna notice your hair. He's gonna notice that you're actually talking to him for once."
Maya's **palm**s sweated against her denim shorts. Jordan Chen, lacrosse captain and human embodiment of effortlessly cool, was actually at this party. And unlike every other party where she'd ghosted him from the safety of a corner, tonight was different. Tonight, she'd promised herself she'd make a move.
She grabbed her favorite **hat**—a vintage baseball cap she'd thrifted—use it as armor. Problem solved. Hair disaster contained.
The party was already in full swing when they arrived. Maya's heart did that annoying fluttery thing whenever she spotted Jordan near the **orange** tree in the backyard, laughing with his friends. His smile was still unfair. Still made her stomach do backflips.
"Just go over there," Tessa whisper-shoved her. "What's the worst that happens?"
Maya approached, limbs feeling like they belonged to someone else. "Hey Jordan!"
He turned, that smile landing on her like **lightning**—bright, sudden, electric. "Maya! Hey!" He gestured to the orange tree. "These things are actually good. Want one?"
She took one, grinning like an idiot. "Sure."
They talked. Actually talked. About school, about music, about how weird it was that senior year was almost over. The night air thick with possibility, with everything unsaid.
Then the wind picked up. Maya's **hat** blew off, tumbling across the yard.
"Oh no," she groaned, hand flying to her **hair**.
Jordan didn't laugh. He sprinted after her **hat**, caught it mid-air, and returned it. But instead of handing it back, he set it on his own head, grinning.
"You know," he said, "your **hair** looks way better without this thing hiding it."
Maya's **palm**s stopped sweating. Her heart, however, was just getting started.
