Hat Camouflage Failed

The baseball cap was supposed to be my disguise. A drooping brim pulled low, mysterious and cool — or at least that's what I told myself when I stole it from my brother's room. I was on a mission: Operation Figure Out Why Jake Waters suddenly followed me on Instagram.

I spotted him instantly at the pool party, of course. No disguise works when you're basically vibrating with anxiety. Jake was by the water, laughing with his friends, hair wet from a recent dive. I positioned myself strategically behind a patio umbrella, occasionally adjusting my hat like I was some sort of undercover agent instead of a socially awkward sixteen-year-old holding a lukewarm soda.

"You look like you're spying on someone," said Maya, suddenly appearing beside me. I nearly spilled my drink.

"I'm not!" I whisper-shouted. "I'm just... observing. From a tactical position."

She raised one perfectly manicured eyebrow. "You do realize Jake can't see your eyes through that hat, right? You look less like mysterious observer and more like you're recovering from eye surgery."

I groaned. "So much for camouflage."

"Here's a thought," Maya said, "instead of lurking by the snack table like a weirdo, you could actually talk to him?"

"What? No. Absolutely not."

"He literally just followed you, Sophia. That's not a coincidence. That's basically a marriage proposal in teenage boy language."

Before I could respond to that absurdity, Jake was walking toward us. Water droplets dripped from his hair onto his shoulders. I instinctively pulled my hat even lower, which probably made me look ridiculous.

"Hey," he said. "Nice hat."

"Thanks," I squeaked.

"You're Sophia, right? From English?" He smiled, and I swear my heart did something genuinely concerning. "I finally got up the courage to follow you. Your posts are actually really funny."

I lifted the brim of my hat just enough to see his face. He wasn't looking at me like I was some weird spy lurking in the corner. He was looking at me like he was nervous too.

"Yeah," I said, finding my voice. "I was hoping you'd notice me. I've been kind of... paying attention. To your posts."

"I know," he laughed. "I've seen you liking them since forever. I just didn't know how to talk to you without it being weird."

Maya mouthed 'you're welcome' from behind his back.

Maybe, I thought, taking off my hat and letting my hair fall free, some missions don't require disguises. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is just show up as yourself, nervous and awkward and real, and see what happens.
