Hairline Cracks

Elena ran her fingers through her hair—still thick, still brown at forty-one, though the mirror told her the gray was winning. She placed the vitamin C supplement under the microscope, adjusting the focus until the crystalline structure blurred into view. Thirty years at NutriCorp, quality control, watching tiny imperfections that no one else noticed.

"Your vitamins again," David had joked that morning, kissing her forehead. "You and your pills."

He didn't know about the hair she'd found on his collar Saturday night. Long, blonde, definitely not hers. And he couldn't have explained why his car was parked across from the pharmaceutical building where their biggest competitor developed their new formula.

The company had hired a private investigator two weeks ago when their proprietary blend started appearing in store-brand bottles. Someone was leaking formulas. Elena had laughed along with everyone else at the meeting—corporate espionage, like something from a movie—but the laughter had died in her throat when she recognized the irregularities in the leaked formula.

David had been asking questions about her work for months. Casual questions. How did they test potency? What security measures protected the research lab? Who had access to the master formulas?

She looked at the vitamin under her microscope again. And then she reached into her pocket and pulled out the hair she'd taken from his coat. She'd spent $200 on a DNA test she didn't tell him about.

The results had arrived an hour ago.

The match wasn't to some blonde mistress. The hair sample matched the DNA of the competitor's lead researcher—David's ex-wife, the woman he'd sworn was just a colleague he consulted with occasionally.

Elena thought about vitamins, about how the wrong dose could poison you even as it promised health. About how marriages, like supplements, could be counterfeited—same packaging, same promises, something entirely different inside.

She deleted the DNA report and opened her email. There was a message from security: "We think we found the leak. Would you be willing to review some evidence?"

Elena typed back: "Yes. I think I can help." Her hands didn't shake. The gray hairs, she decided, suited her. They were evidence of things finally becoming clear.
