Greens, Games, and Growing Pains

Maya's hair was supposed to be caramel highlights. Instead, she looked like a sun-bleached orangutan.

"It's not that bad," Chloe lied, barely looking up from her phone.

Maya glared at her reflection. "My hair is literally the color of a traffic cone."

Chloe shrugged. "At least your mom didn't force you into padel lessons to 'expand your social circle.'"

That was the thing about Chloe lately — everything was a complaint. Ever since she'd started hanging out with the popular crowd, their friendship had felt like walking on eggshells. Maya missed the days when they'd binge Netflix without Chloe checking her notifications every five minutes.

The next morning, Maya's mom announced they'd be having spinach smoothies for breakfast.

"Gross, Mom."

"It's healthy! And you need energy for your first padel class."

Maya choked down the green sludge, grabbed her racket, and headed to the club. She'd rather be anywhere else.

The padel courts were buzzing with teenagers. Maya stood near the wall, feeling out of place in her neon hair and hand-me-down racket.

"Hey! You're in our beginner group?"

Maya turned to see a girl with curly purple hair and mismatched socks.

"I'm Sam. You can serve next to me — I'm terrible at this."

Something about Sam's genuine smile made Maya relax. Maybe this wouldn't be so awful.

By the third game, they were both laughing so hard they could barely hit the ball. Sam had zero coordination but unlimited enthusiasm.

"Your hair is awesome," Sam said during a water break. "Did you do it yourself?"

Maya laughed. "Accidentally. But thanks."

"Want to get smoothies after? There's this place that makes them with spinach but they actually taste good."

"Spinach?" Maya raised an eyebrow.

"Trust me. Way better than traffic cone hair disasters."

Maya grinned. Maybe new beginnings weren't so bad after all.

Her phone buzzed — a text from Chloe asking if she wanted to come over. Maya hesitated, then pocketed it.

"Sam?" she called. "About those smoothies..."

Some friendships fade. Others are just getting started.
