Green Teeth & Thunder
Maya's graduation party was supposed to be legendary. The inflatable **pool** shimmered in her backyard like a承诺 of cool she definitely wasn't feeling. At 17, somehow everyone else had mastered the art of existing, while Maya was still pretty sure she was doing it wrong.
"Fix your **hat**, Maya," her mom had called earlier, but Maya had already yanked the baseball cap lower. It was her armor—nobody could see her overthinking everything if her forehead was covered.
Then she saw him: Caleb, standing near the dip table, actually laughing at something. Maya's stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. She smoothed her sundress, checked her reflection in the kitchen window, and headed over like a person who knew how to talk to boys.
She grabbed a spinach artichoke dip tortilla chip because grown-up food seemed like the right move.
"Hey Maya!" Caleb grinned. "What's up?"
"Not much," she said, and then—because the universe hated her—she smiled her biggest, most genuine smile.
Caleb's eyes went wide. There was a pause. Then he politely pointed at his own teeth.
Maya bolted to the bathroom. **SPINACH**. A massive, gorgeous piece of green wedged between her front teeth like it was paying rent.
"I'm done," she whispered to her reflection. "I am actually done."
That's when the sky cracked open. **Lightning** split the sky like something dramatic and cinematic, thunder rattling the windowframe. Rain suddenly poured down, sending everyone screaming from the **pool** area.
Maya heard barking. Her childhood **dog**, Barnaby—a golden retriever with zero brain cells and maximum heart—had chased a terrified squirrel straight into the muddy yard, then pranced back looking ridiculously proud of himself.
Caleb was standing on the porch, soaked, laughing as Barnaby shook muddy water everywhere. He caught Maya's eye through the screen door.
"Your dog is chaos," he called. "I love it."
"He's a lot," she said, then shrugged. "Kind of like this party."
"Yeah." Caleb's smile was different now—not the polite one from before. "Hey, can we restart? I'm Caleb."
"Maya." She touched her **hat**. "And I promise my teeth are usually spinach-free."
He laughed for real this time. Lightning flashed again, illuminating everything bright and sudden and weirdly perfect.
Sometimes the storm changes everything. Sometimes you just need to get caught in the rain.
