Green Teeth Protocol

spinachiphonespypapaya

Maya's mom insisted papaya smoothies were "a taste of home," but seventh grade at Northwood High felt nothing like home. Especially with bright green **spinach** chunks stuck in her braces.

"You got a little..." Liam from chem class gestured at his own teeth, grimacing. "You know, green stuff."

Maya's face burned. She'd spent three months trying to become invisible at this school, and somehow she'd failed at basic existence.

At lunch, she noticed Chloe - the Chloe, who had 12.4k followers and wore vintage band tees like they were uniforms - sitting alone, furiously typing on her **iPhone**. Something about Chloe's frantic scrolling made Maya pause. The popular crowd had seemed weirdly tense all week.

Maya's fingers itched. She'd been unofficially **spy**-ing on the friend group dynamics since September - not in a creepy way, just survival observation. But this felt different.

"What are you looking at?"

Maya jumped. Chloe was right there, phone pressed against her chest like a shield.

"Nothing! I just - your smoothie looks good."

Chloe's defensive posture melted. "It's **papaya** mango. My grandma's recipe."

"My mom makes this spinach monstrosity," Maya blurted, then wanted to disappear. "I have green in my braces right now, don't I?"

Chloe laughed - actually laughed, not performative social media laugh. "Yeah, you kinda do. But honestly? I've been wearing the same hoodie for three days because I can't find the courage to ask my friends why they kicked me out of the group chat."

The words tumbled out, fast and jagged.

Maya's "spy" instincts had been right. But instead of juicy drama, she'd found someone else who felt completely alone.

"Want to trade smoothies?" Maya asked. "My spinach embarrassment for your papaya escape?"

Chloe's smile reached her eyes for the first time. "Only if you teach me how to pretend everything's fine when you're dying inside."

"Deal." Maya grinned, green teeth and all.

Some things, she realized, were worth standing out for - even if it meant being the girl with spinach in her braces and a new friend who made the best papaya smoothies on campus.
