Green Teeth, Orange Hair

The cafeteria was weirdly quiet for a Tuesday, which should've been my first clue. I sat across from Jordan—the same Jordan I'd been crushing on since seventh grade—trying to act casual while mentally calculating the risk-reward ratio of actually speaking.

"So," Jordan said. "I saw your post."

My stomach did that horrible lurchy thing it does when something is simultaneously amazing and terrible. I'd finally dyed my hair orange over the weekend—a spur-of-the-moment, rebellion-against-my-mom's-safe-beige-aesthetic decision—and posted a mirror selfie with the caption "new era who dis."

"Thanks," I managed, my voice sounding weirdly squeaky. "It's... different."

"Different good," Jordan said, and then—because the universe apparently enjoys tormenting me—added, "You have a little something in your teeth, though."

I froze. The spinach salad I'd confidently chosen over pizza (healthier = cooler, right?) had betrayed me. I flashed what I hoped was a casual smile instead of a terrified grimace and bolted to the bathroom.

The mirror confirmed my worst nightmare: bright green spinach wedged between my front teeth, visible from space. I'd been sitting there for twenty minutes. TWENTY. MINUTES. Talking to Jordan. With green teeth.

My phone buzzed in my pocket—a group chat blowing up about something called #SpinachGirl trending on TikTok. Someone had recorded me. Someone had RECORD-ED me. My hands shook as I unlocked my iPhone, but the crack in my screen (from dropping it during my failed skateboard phase last month) made the video hard to see. Not that I needed to see it. The comments were already rolling in.

I washed my mouth out with aggressive soap-and-water energy, my newly orange hair feeling suddenly stupid, a cry for attention I now definitely had but definitely didn't want. Jordan would never speak to me again. I'd be known as Spinach Girl forever. This was it. Social suicide.

But then my phone buzzed again. Jordan: "lol everyone has spinach teeth moments. also the hair actually looks really cool. want to sit together tomorrow?"

I stared at my screen, my reflection still showing green-ish teeth and ridiculous orange hair and humiliation that would probably last until college. But maybe—just maybe—sometimes the most embarrassing moments are the ones that finally let people see the real you. Even if the real you has spinach in your teeth.
