Green Teeth & Bad Hair Days

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangled in hair that had somehow transformed into a bird's nest overnight. The DIY highlights she'd attempted at 2 AM after watching TikTok tutorials had turned her caramel curls into something resembling dried straw. Meanwhile, her orthodontist's worst nightmare: fluorescent green **spinach** wedged stubbornly in her braces, remnants of the smoothie she'd chugged thinking it would help her 'glow up' before sophomore year.

Her **iPhone** buzzed with incoming snaps from the group chat—everyone posting mirror selfies before tonight's back-to-school party. Maya considered faking sick, but that would mean missing seeing Alex, who'd finally noticed her existence during summer gym class when they'd both pretended to be dead last during dodgeball.

'You good?' texted Jaz, her best friend since third grade, sensing Maya's radio silence.

Maya typed: 'Everything's a disaster. I'm not going.'

Then deleted it. Because Jaz would show up at her door with mascara and hair products and zero tolerance for Maya's periodic meltdowns.

Instead, Maya grabbed her dad's clippers from the bathroom drawer. Five minutes later, her bathroom floor was covered in straw-like chunks. Her curls, now a pixie cut, bounced with unexpected life. She wiped the stubborn spinach from her braces with renewed determination.

When Jaz arrived, she took one look at Maya's new haircut and nodded slowly. 'You look like yourself. Not who you think you should be for Alex.'

'Is that good or bad?'

'It's everything.' Jaz held up her phone. 'Now smile before we're late.'

The party was exactly what Maya expected: thumping bass, plastic cups, people pretending to be cooler than they felt. Alex waved from across the room, and Maya's stomach performed synchronized gymnastics. But then someone posted a Snapchat of her earlier—green teeth, wild hair, mid-meltdown—to the school's story with the caption 'reality vs. IG lol.'

Maya froze. Waited for the pointing, the whispers.

Instead, people started approaching her. 'That was honestly brave,' one girl said. 'I feel like that every morning.' Another: 'Your hair is giving main character energy.' Alex, finally reaching her: 'I like that you don't try too hard.'

Maya ran a hand through her pixie cut, realizing something she'd missed through hours of scrolling and comparing: the right people wouldn't want the filtered version anyway. Her phone buzzed again—Jaz posting a new pic of them together, caption: 'my best friend & her existential crisis hair. we love a journey.'

'You going to post that spinach-in-teeth pic?' Alex asked, grinning.

Maya laughed for the first time all night. 'Absolutely. Consider it my origin story.'
