Green Smoothies and Walking Dead

Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, her natural curls springing into wild formations after another failed attempt at the sleek, straight look everyone at Northwood High seemed to pull off effortlessly. The social pyramid at school had clear tiers, and she'd been tumbling down them since seventh grade, landing somewhere near the bottom with the kids who brought lunch boxes and asked questions in class.

"Maya! Your green smoothie!" her mom called from downstairs.

Spinach. Again.

She trudged down like a zombie—ironically, the same role her little brother Leo was perfecting for his Halloween makeup tutorial YouTube channel. At least someone in the family had found their thing.

"You need vitamins for your brain, mija," Mom said, handing her a murky glass. "Big history presentation today, right?"

Right. The Egypt project. Maya had spent three days building a pyramid out of sugar cubes, only to have it collapse when her cat knocked it over. Now she was going in with a hastily-assembled cardboard version and prayer.

At school, she spotted Chloe by the water fountain, surrounded by her usual crowd. Chloe, with perfect hair that somehow always looked effortless, stood at the top of the social pyramid Maya had mentally constructed in sixth grade. They were laughing about something, probably weekend plans that didn't include studying ancient civilizations.

Maya's phone buzzed. Leo had sent a photo: himself in full zombie makeup, holding up a thumbs-up. *"Good luck! Don't be a zombie like me! 😴"*

She smiled despite herself. Maybe that was the real lesson—not about climbing pyramids or fitting into someone else's idea of perfect. She took a sip of the spinach smoothie. It wasn't terrible.

"Hey, Maya," Chloe said, actually noticing her for once. "Love your hair today. It looks... real."

Real.

Maya touched her curls. "Thanks."

Maybe the pyramid wasn't something to climb. Maybe you just built your own shape, with your own materials—even if they included spinach smoothies, zombie brothers, and hair that refused to be tamed.
