Green Smoothie Summer
Maya's first day at The Blend Station started with a spinach disaster. She'd managed to get the leafy greens everywhere—on her apron, in her hair, somehow even on her phone. Behind the counter, she could feel everyone watching. The popular kids from Northwood High always came here after school, their perfect Instagram lives documented in real-time.
"You good, new girl?" Derek asked. He was a junior, played varsity basketball, and had the kind of smile that made Maya's stomach do actual gymnastics.
"Totally," she lied, trying to sound chill. "Just... embracing the green lifestyle."
He laughed, and Maya felt herself flush. Great. Now she looked like a tomato AND a mess.
The bell chimed. A girl with bright purple hair walked in, ordered something called a Tropical Sunrise, and watched Maya like a hawk. When Maya handed her the smoothie, the girl took one sip and frowned.
"You forgot the papaya."
"Papaya?" Maya repeated. "I thought that was just... a decorative fruit?"
The girl—Riley, according to her name tag—shrugged. "It's the secret ingredient. Makes it taste like summer."
Summer. That's what this whole summer job was supposed to be about. Instead, Maya was stressing about college applications, friend group drama that exploded over group chat, and whether Derek would ever notice her as more than "the new girl who struggles with blenders."
Her iPhone buzzed constantly. Friends posting beach photos. Party invites she couldn't go to. The eternal FOMO.
But then Riley started teaching her things. How to properly cut a papaya (who knew it had those weird black seeds inside?). How to balance spinach so it didn't taste like lawn clippings. How Derek came here every day because he was actually vegan, not because he was health-obsessed.
"He's been checking you out," Riley said casually one afternoon, chopping mango like a pro. "Just so you know."
Maya almost dropped the blender lid. "What? No way."
"Way." Riley grinned. "He thinks the spinach incident was... actually kind of adorable."
That Friday, Derek finally asked for her number. And for once, Maya didn't overthink it. Didn't wonder what her friends would say, didn't stress about how it would look on social media.
She just said yes.
Later that night, she made herself a papaya smoothie with extra spinach, posting a pic with the caption: "Learning to love the weird ingredients. Summer's looking up."
Some things, she realized, were better off the feed. Some things were just for you.
