Green Smoothie Soul

The papaya sat on my kitchen counter like an alien artifact. Mom's latest health phase meant our fridge now looked like a composting experiment.

"It's packed with nutrients, Leo!" she chirped, blending something that looked like radioactive sludge.

I grabbed my baseball cap and bolted. Summer before sophomore year was supposed to be about Makayla's pool parties, not chlorophyll withdrawals.

Our cat, Nacho, watched from the windowsill like the smug judge he was.

At Makayla's, her pool shimmered like something from a TikTok filter. Everyone already there—Tyler flexing in his swim trunks, Sasha perfecting her cannonball form. I'd been on swim team since seventh grade, but suddenly my trunks felt two sizes too small.

"Leo! Finally!" Makayla waved me over. "We're doing smoothies. Try this!"

She handed me a green monstrosity. I took a sip, ready to fake enthusiasm.

Then Tyler smirked. "You got a little something..." He pointed at his teeth.

My stomach dropped. Spinach. From breakfast. Stuck in my braces like neon-green neon signs broadcasting my dork status to everyone.

The group went silent. Not mean-silent—awkward-silent. The kind where someone should say something but nobody does.

I considered faking a phone call. Or claiming Nacho had escaped. Or just drowning myself in the deep end.

Instead, I started laughing. Like, actually cracking up.

"What?" Tyler looked confused.

"Dude, my mom basically force-fed me kale this morning," I said. "I've been walking around with farm-to-mouth decor all day. I'm basically a human salad."

Makayla snorted. Then Sasha. Then even Tyler.

That night, I actually tried Mom's papaya smoothie. Not terrible. Not amazing either. But as I texted Makayla about actually hanging out—just us, next weekend—I realized something.

Growing up meant learning that the stuff you thought would ruin you? Sometimes it just made you funnier. And the green smoothie soul-crushing embarrassment? It became the story that made people remember you.

Nacho jumped on my lap, purring like he'd planned everything all along.
