Green Smoothie Flex
Maya stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, iPhone propped up against the toothbrush holder. The Instagram timer counted down: 3, 2, 1...
"Hey guys! So I've been getting into this really healthy lifestyle lately..." She paused, scrolling through her feed where everyone was posting aesthetic breakfast bowls and glow-up transformation posts. "...and today I'm making this super detox smoothie with spinach and papaya."
The papaya sat on the counter, looking vaguely alien. Her mom had bought it on sale, which meant nobody in the house actually knew what to do with it.
Spinach. She could handle spinach. TikTok said it made you glow. TikTok also said a lot of things.
Maya dumped the entire bag into the blender. More greens = more health, right? She hacked at the papaya with a butter knife, creating a massacre of orange flesh and seeds. Whatever. It was all going in the blender anyway.
The resulting concoction looked like something from a nuclear swamp.
"And it's actually really good!" she lied to her phone's camera, taking a cautious sip. Her face did something involuntary. "Okay, so it's an acquired taste, but—"
Her little brother chose that exact moment to burst through the door. "MAYA! Mom says you need to clean the—" He stopped. "Is that pond water?"
"It's a DETOX smoothie, Caleb."
"It looks like Shrek threw up in a cup."
"Get out!"
"Whatever." He paused at the doorway. "Also, your phone's been vibrating for like five minutes."
Maya grabbed her iPhone. A text from Jordan: "crew hanging at the pier, u coming?"
Her thumb hovered over the screen. The smoothie sat on the counter, innocent and kale-colored. She'd been trying so hard all summer to be someone new. Someone who posted aesthetic health content and had perfect skin and knew what to do with tropical fruits.
She poured the smoothie down the sink.
"Yeah," she texted back. "omw"
Her reflection in the mirror looked different now. Less posed, more real. Some days you're the person who makes green smoothies. Some days you're just a kid showing up to hang with friends because that's what actually matters.
She grabbed her jacket. The papaya could wait. This summer wasn't over yet.
