Green Smoothie Disaster
Maya's summer job at Tropical Oasis smoothie shop was supposed to be chill — easy money, endless free smoothies, zero drama. Until The Incident.
It was peak Saturday afternoon when the popular crowd walked in. Jason, with his perfectly messy hair and that confident smile that made Maya's stomach do backflips, led the pack. They'd just finished beach volleyball and looked annoyingly perfect.
"What's good?" Jason asked, leaning against the counter like he owned it.
"The Green Machine is — " Maya started, but her brain short-circuited when Jason's deep-brown eyes locked onto hers. "The Machine is ... green?"
Her coworker Tyler snorted from the blender station.
"Cool," Jason said. "Make it two."
Maya's hands shook as she grabbed fresh spinach, papaya chunks, and coconut water. She was SO going to nail this. She added extra spinach because — health, right?
The blender roared. Everything seemed fine until she tried pouring the thick green sludge into the cups. Her palm sweaty from nervousness, the cup slipped. The entire contents splashed across her apron and — somehow — onto the counter.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
"Did you just baptize yourself in kale?" someone whispered.
"Spinshakes," another person giggled.
Maya's face burned. She grabbed a random hat from the lost-and-found bucket behind her — some ridiculous straw thing with flamingos — and pulled it low over her eyes.
"My bad," she muttered. "On the house. Obviously."
But Jason just laughed. Not mean laughing. Actual laughing.
"That was legendary," he said, handing her a stack of napkins. "Hey, you wanna hang later? We're doing bonfire at the beach."
Tyler raised his eyebrows from the blender station.
"Sure," Maya said, trying to ignore the green smoothie dripping from her chin. "Why not."
Sometimes your most embarrassing moments become your best stories. And sometimes, wearing a ridiculous hat covered in green smoothie is exactly how you make friends.
