Green Smoothie Disaster
Maya's palms were sweating-literally dripping-as she stood in front of the popular kids' lunch table. This was it. Her chance to finally sit with them, to not be invisible anymore.
"Hey, Maya!" called Chloe, the queen bee of sophomore year. "What's that?"
Maya glanced down at her mason jar. The green sludge inside looked like something from a toxic waste spill. "Oh, it's this... smoothie thing. My mom's really into health stuff now."
She'd spent twenty minutes that morning blending spinach, banana, and some random vitamin supplement her mom swore would "boost her immune system." The result looked revolting.
"Let me try!" Chloe demanded, extending her hand.
Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. "Actually, it's kinda-"
"Don't be stingy." Chloe grabbed the jar and took a massive gulp.
For three seconds, everything was fine. Then Chloe's face turned a shade of green that matched the smoothie. She gagged. And then, in slow motion, she spat the entire mouthful directly onto Maya's favorite white hoodie.
The table went silent.
And that's when Buster-her grandma's ancient, blind pug-who'd somehow escaped from home and followed her to school (she'd DEFINITELY be grounded when her parents found out)-bounded into the cafeteria, trailing his leash behind him like a divorced ribbon.
Buster made a beeline for Chloe's purse, snatched something shiny, and bolted.
"MY PHONE!" Chloe screamed.
The chase scene that followed was legendary. Maya sliding across spilled juice, Chloe abandoning her dignity to sprint after a dog moving at approximately one mile per hour, the entire cafeteria losing their collective minds.
Later, covered in spinach smoothie and sitting in the principal's office next to a very pleased Buster, Maya caught Chloe's eye. Instead of the glare she expected, Chloe was laughing.
"Your dog," Chloe said, still catching her breath, "is a total legend."
Maya's palm no longer sweated. Sometimes the worst moments become the best stories.
