Green Smoothie Disaster
My mom stood in the kitchen holding a bag of organic spinach like it was some kind of prize. "Honey, try this! It's packed with every vitamin you need!" She was in her healthy phase again.
I rolled my eyes so hard I practically saw my brain. "Mom, I'm not drinking that sludge. I have a reputation to maintain."
"What reputation? The one where you complain about feeling tired all the time?"
She had me there. Between honors classes, soccer practice, and trying to maintain my barely-there social life, I was running on fumes and anxiety. So I tried the spinach smoothie. And honestly? It wasn't terrible.
Until Lucas walked in right as I took a massive gulp, and some of the green mixture decided to escape and create a trail down my chin. Lucas. The guy I'd been lowkey crushing on since September. He froze, stared at my green chin situation, and I wanted to literally bear-crawl into a hole and die.
"Uh... nice look?" He actually smiled though. Not the mean laugh I expected.
"It's... experimental face paint?" I sputtered. "For... drama club?"
"Sure, Maya. Whatever you say." He grabbed an apple from the counter. "Hey, speaking of drama club, auditions are Friday. You should try out."
My stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be a normal organ. "You think?"
"Yeah. You've got... presence. Even with spinach smoothie face."
The next day at school, I actually signed up for auditions. My friends were shook. Maya, the girl who actively avoided attention, voluntarily trying out for a play? But something about that moment in the kitchen shifted something. Maybe it was the vitamin boost, maybe it was Lucas actually noticing me, or maybe I was just tired of playing it safe.
I didn't get the lead, obviously. But I got a supporting role with actual lines. And Lucas, who turned out to be genuinely nice and not just cute, high-fived me in the hallway afterward.
My mom still makes those stupid green smoothies. I still drink them, just more carefully now. And sometimes, when Lucas is over studying with me, I even make them for both of us. He pretends to hate them, but I've seen him finish the whole cup.
Growth looks different on everyone. Sometimes it's a spinach mustache and a sudden interest in drama club. Sometimes it's letting yourself be seen, even when you feel ridiculous. And sometimes you have to go through some seriously awkward moments to figure out who you actually want to be.
