Green Smoothie Disaster

Maya had three goals for summer: reinvent herself, finally talk to Tyler at the neighborhood pool party, and somehow stop being invisible. So far, she was 0 for 3.

"You're WHAT again?" her best friend Jenna stared at the vibrant green sludge in Maya's hand.

"It's a spinach smoothie. I'm going healthy. New me, remember?" Maya took a tentative sip and immediately regretted everything. The taste was somewhere between lawn clippings and regret.

"New you is gonna be single you if you keep drinking pond water," Jenna deadpanned.

The problem was, Tyler was hosting the pool party of the summer. Like, ACTUAL Tyler, who'd smiled at Maya that one time in algebra before realizing she was nobody. Maya figured if she showed up looking healthy and confident, maybe he'd finally notice her existed.

But first, she had to survive her new dog walking gig. Mrs. Henderson paid fifty bucks to walk her Pomeranian, Fluffy, three times a week. Money Maya desperately needed for the perfect swimsuit.

Fluffy, naturally, had other plans. The second they reached the park, the tiny dog spotted a squirrel and bolted. Maya's spinach smoothie went airborne—green explosion everywhere. Her white tank top, her denim shorts, basically her entire life.

"ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!" she screamed as Fluffy returned, proudly wagging her tiny tail like nothing happened.

By the time she limped to Tyler's party, covered in green splatter and dog hair, she wanted to die. But then she heard Tyler laugh.

"Dude, what HAPPENED?" He wasn't mocking her. He was genuinely interested. "Did you fight a salad?"

"Pretty much," Maya said, surprisingly chill about it. "Dog walking conspiracy."

"That's actually legendary," Tyler said, gesturing toward the pool. "You should probably wash that off though. You look like the Swamp Thing's cousin."

They spent the rest of summer accidentally meeting at the pool. Sometimes reinvention isn't about becoming someone else—it's about being weird enough to find people who like that version instead.
