Green Smoothie Chaos
I'd been crushing on Jake since seventh grade, and today was the day I'd finally talk to him at lunch. My mom, obviously trying to sabotage me with her wellness phase, insisted I drink her newest creation: a spinach and kale smoothie that looked like actual swamp water.
"It'll give you radiant skin!" she'd promised. Instead, it gave me a green mustache that I didn't notice until I was already standing in front of Jake and his friends at their usual cafeteria table. I was mid-sentence about how great the cross country team was this year when Marcus, Jake's best friend, started cracking up.
"You got a little... something..." Marcus gestured at his own face, failing spectacularly at trying to be helpful.
I froze. My hand flew to my upper lip, and sure enough—green smoothie residue. Brilliant. Absolutely fantastic first impression.
"Spinach," I muttered, wiping frantically with a napkin. "My mom's health kick."
Jake, though, just smiled. It wasn't a mean smile. It was kind of... nice?
"That's actually pretty wild," he said. "My mom tried to get me to drink those last year. I nearly puked."
The tension broke. We ended up talking about our moms' terrible health experiments, and somehow I found myself sitting with them for the rest of lunch. The conversation drifted to his tattoo—a small goldfish outline on his forearm.
"My first pet," he explained when I asked. "Lived for five years. I was devastated when it died."
"Same," I said. "I had this goldfish that survived everything. My brother even left the tank open overnight once, and it was just chilling on the floor next morning like nothing happened. Total warrior."
"Bull," Jake laughed. "No way a goldfish survives that."
"Swear on my life," I said, holding up three fingers. "That fish had main character energy."
Later, as I walked to my locker, I caught my reflection in a classroom window. My hair was doing this weird flip thing on one side from where I'd been running my hands through it during our conversation. But you know what? Jake had still talked to me. Still laughed at my terrible jokes. Still sat next to me when he could've sat anywhere.
Maybe the green smoothie fiasco wasn't a disaster after all. Maybe it was just... an opening. And tomorrow I'd actually remember to check my reflection before walking up to my crush. Progress, not perfection, right?
