Green Smoothie Catastrophe
Maya's first week at The Green Bowl wasn't exactly going according to plan. The health café's signature smoothie had somehow managed to splatter across her apron, creating a Rorschach test of questionable fortune.
"You've got some... spinach... in your hair," said Liam, the cute barista with the surprisingly good skin for someone who worked around fried kale chips all day.
Maya's face burned hotter than the chai tea steamer. This was it. This was her villain origin story. She'd die alone, surrounded by salad greens and essential oils. "Thanks. That's... that's actually the look I'm going for. It's called 'accidentally healthy chic.'"
Liam actually laughed. Not that polite laugh adults gave when teenagers said something mildly amusing, but a real one. "Smooth. Literally."
Her phone buzzed. Mom, demanding to know if she'd remembered to take her **vitamin** D supplements because apparently her daughter was incapable of basic survival without maternal supervision. Maya typed back a thumbs-up emoji, because that's what mature, independent sixteen-year-olds did.
"Your **cat** again?" Liam nodded toward her phone background, featuring her orange tabby, Mochi, looking judgmental as always.
"Yeah. Mochi basically runs my life. I'm just the staff who opens the tuna cans."
"My sister's the same way. Her cat's like her emotional support animal, except emotionally unavailable."
The bell above the door chimed. The popular girls from school walked in—Chloe, Harper, and their entourage. Maya's stomach did that thing it always did, like she'd swallowed a swarm of butterflies that were now throwing a rave.
"Oh my god, Maya?" Chloe's perfectly manicured eyebrows rose. "Since when do you work here? This place is so... you."
Was that an insult? Maya's brain buffered at 100%.
"It's actually pretty cool," Liam said smoothly, handing her a clean cloth. "Maya's been killing it. Made a guy cry yesterday because he ordered our kale salad and she convinced him to add actual **spinach** instead. Said his future self would thank her."
Harper snorted. "That's absolutely something you'd do."
They ordered their expensive plant-based waters with unpronounceable ingredients, and Maya managed not to embarrass herself further. Small wins.
Later, as she mopped up another smoothie disaster (this time: beet ginger explosion), her phone lit up. A group chat notification from the girls she'd thought were out of her league.
Chloe: btw Liam was totally **fox**-ing you earlier
Harper: like full heart eyes
Chloe: we're doing Connor's party friday, you should come
Maya stared at the screen, unable to process. Sometimes the universe worked in mysterious, spinach-filled ways.
She typed back: bet.
And for the first time in forever, Maya felt like maybe, just maybe, she was exactly where she was supposed to be.
