Green Smoothie Bet

The cafeteria social pyramid was real, and Maya had been stuck at the base level since sixth grade. Popular kids at the corner tables, the normals in the middle, and everyone else scattered around the edges like confetti nobody bothered to sweep up.

"You're not actually gonna drink that, are you?" Sam asked, gesturing at Maya's lunch. "It looks like swamp water."

"It's a spinach smoothie," Maya said, defending her choice like her life depended on it. "With papaya and mango. It's actually good."

Sam made a face. "Since when do you eat health food anyway? You used to survive on pizza rolls and rebellion."

"Since I decided to reinvent myself," Maya said, adjusting the oversized bucket hat she'd started wearing as part of her new aesthetic. Junior year vibe check: different Maya, same awkward.

Their friend group had shifted over summer. Chloe transferred to a fancy art school, and now it was mostly just Maya and Sam holding down their usual table. Maya figured high school was basically a pyramid scheme—you either climbed your way up or got crushed under everyone else's ambition.

"Whatever," Sam said, stealing a grape from her lunch. "Just don't expect me to try that lawn clippings smoothie."

"Double dog dare you," Maya challenged.

"You're on." Sam took a sip, made a horrified face, then actually swallowed. "Okay, wow. That's… not terrible? Actually, it's kinda fire."

Maya laughed. "See? Growth mindset."

A gaggle of popular girls walked past, their heels clicking like metronomes. One of them, Jenna, actually paused at their table. She'd been Maya's friend in elementary school before the great social stratification of middle school.

"Love the hat," Jenna said, and for a second Maya thought she was being sarcastic. But Jenna's smile seemed genuine. "It's giving main character energy."

Then she was gone, off to join her pyramid-level friends.

Maya stared at Sam. "Did that just happen?"

"The school year just started," Sam said, taking another sip of the smoothie. "Anything's possible. Even Jenna admitting you have style."

Maybe the cafeteria pyramid wasn't as rigid as Maya thought. Maybe reinvention wasn't about climbing over other people, but about figuring out who you actually wanted to be—spinach smoothies, questionable fashion choices, and all.

"Tomorrow," Maya said, "I'm bringing you one. No arguments."

Sam groaned. "Fine. But if I turn into a health nut, you're taking the blame."
