Green Smoothie Apocalypse

Riley's first day at Northwood High was supposed to be a fresh start. Instead, it became a viral disaster.

"Just one green smoothie for breakfast," her mom had said. "It'll give you energy." Instead, it gave her a green mustache that she didn't discover until third period.

The spinach mustache might have gone unnoticed if Maya hadn't accidentally taken a photo of them during lunch. "Riley, your face—" Maya started, then stopped, eyes wide.

Riley pulled out her iPhone to check. There, emblazoned on her upper lip like a terrible temporary tattoo, was a thick green smear of spinach. In the background of the photo, the entire lunch line was staring.

"Oh my god," Riley whispered. "How long has this been here?"

"Since first period," Maya admitted. "I thought it was intentional. Like, a statement?"

Riley's face burned hotter than the afternoon sun. She'd walked into homeroom like this. Introduced herself to her crush, Tyler, like this. Said "Nice to meet you" with a mouth full of green.

But then Maya did something unexpected. She posted the photo with the caption: "First day struggles: when your healthy breakfast betrays you. #NewGirlProblems #SpinachStache"

Within minutes, comments flooded in. Not mean ones. Other kids sharing their own embarrassing moments. Someone posted a photo of themselves with blue teeth from blueberry smoothies. Another with chocolate all over their face.

"You're not the only one," Maya said, grinning. "Welcome to Northwood, where we embrace the chaos."

That afternoon, as they walked home beneath an orange sky painted by sunset, Riley realized something. The spinach mustache wasn't the catastrophe she'd thought. It was her awkward, messy, authentic introduction to a world where perfection wasn't the goal.

"You're a good friend," Riley told Maya.

"I'm a friend who knows how to spin a disaster," Maya corrected. "Besides, Tyler said he thought the spinach look was 'boldly unconventional.'"

Riley laughed. Maybe Northwood High wouldn't be so bad after all.
