Green Smoothie Apocalypse
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in her curls that had somehow developed a personality of their own overnight. The hair situation was officially catastrophic.
"You look like a zombie," her little brother commented, slurping his juice box in the doorway.
"Thanks, Leo. Helpful as always." She grabbed her backpack and phone, checking her texts. Chloe's message glowed on screen: meet @ boba place @ 4??? 💕
Maya's stomach did that thing it always did when she thought about Chloe — like someone had set off fireworks in her abdomen. The problem was, Chloe was flawless. Chloe probably woke up looking like a K-pop idol, while Maya's hair was currently staging a rebellion against gravity itself.
The solution, obviously, was a total lifestyle reinvention.
Her mom had started this wellness kick, which meant the refrigerator now contained suspicious amounts of green things. Maya's research (three TikTok tutorials and one Pinterest board) suggested that the path to aesthetic perfection involved consuming actual vegetation.
She'd been running every morning for a week because online articles said exercise cleared your skin and gave you that glow. So far, she'd mostly achieved exhaustion and the ability to identify exactly which neighbors left their houses at 6:45 AM.
Now for phase two: the green smoothie experiment.
Maya surveyed the kitchen counter: papaya (acquired), spinach (check), yogurt, and a banana. She tossed everything into the blender with the confidence of someone who'd never blended papaya in her life.
The result looked like something that might crawl out of a swamp.
"You're drinking that?" Leo asked, horror dawning on his face.
"It's called wellness, you uncultured gremlin."
The first sip wasn't terrible. The second sip was concerning. By the third sip, she was questioning every life choice that had led to this moment. The spinach taste was doing something aggressive to her palate.
But Maya was nothing if not stubborn. She finished the entire glass, feeling weirdly proud of herself for consuming something so clearly designed for rabbits.
"I'm healthy now," she announced to no one in particular.
At the boba place, Chloe was already there, wearing that oversized hoodie she always stole from her sister. Maya's heart did that fireworks thing again.
"Hey!" Chloe waved. "You too?"
"Me too what?" Maya slid into the booth, trying to act natural and not like someone who'd just consumed a salad in liquid form.
"The wellness thing." Chloe laughed. "I saw your Instagram story. My mom got on this green smoothie kick too, so I'm basically starving until further notice. I'd literally kill for some actual food that didn't grow in dirt."
Maya stared at her. "Wait — you saw my—"
"Yeah! Your running selfies are actually kinda iconic ngl. I've been wanting to start but I'm too lazy to go alone. We should go together sometime?"
Maya's brain short-circuited. "Like... together-together?"
"Unless you already have a running buddy?" Chloe tilted her head, smiling. "Which, rude if you do. I thought we were friends."
"No running buddy," Maya managed. "Definitely no running buddy."
"Cool. Saturday morning? And don't even think about drinking spinach before we go. I want you conscious enough to talk."
"Deal." Maya grinned. "No spinach. Probably."
Her phone buzzed — another text from Leo: did you die or is the smoothie working lol
nMaya typed back: the smoothie changed my life shut up
Outside the boba place, the afternoon sun caught Maya's hair in the window reflection. The curls were still doing their own thing, chaotic and untamed and absolutely not behaving. Somehow, that felt exactly right.
