Green Smile, Orange Heart
Maya's hair wasn't cooperating. Again. She'd spent forty-five minutes trying to perfect the messy waves her favorite influencer had rocked in her latest TikTok, but instead she looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Her iPhone buzzed on the bathroom counter — Kai had texted: "Can't wait to see you tonight! 🧡"
Her stomach did that thing where it felt like someone was squeezing it like a stress ball. This wasn't just any hangout. This was MAYBE-A-DATE-DUNNO-NOT-SURE vibes, and she was spiraling.
"Maya! Dinner's ready!" her mom yelled from downstairs.
She'd forced herself to eat actual vegetables for dinner like a responsible almost-adult, which meant she currently had spinach stuck in her teeth. She leaned toward the mirror, mouth open wide like a weirdo, trying to locate the offending green bit with her fingernail.
That's when Buster, her family's golden retriever, decided this was the perfect moment to sprint into the bathroom and launch himself full-body against her legs. Maya shrieked, flailing, which caused her elbow to knock into the fruit bowl on the counter. An orange rolled off, bounced dramatically on the tile floor, and Buster immediately decided it was his new best friend.
"BUSTER, DROP IT," she commanded, but he was already galloping down the hallway like he'd just stolen the crown jewels.
Maya chased after him, still doing the open-mouthed I'm-trying-to-find-spinach-in-my-teeth face, burst into the living room where her dad was watching basketball, and froze.
Because Kai was early. Kai was standing in her doorway. Kai was watching her chase her dog with spinach (presumably) still stuck in her teeth and her hair looking like electrocuted spaghetti.
"Uh," Kai said.
"I have spinach in my teeth, don't I?" Maya asked, defeated.
Kai smiled. "Yeah. But also, your hair looks kind of amazing?"
Maya blinked.
"Seriously," Kai said. "Mine never does that cool thing where it's all messy but intentional. You just look like you woke up like that."
Buster trotted back into the room, orange still in mouth, and dropped it at Kai's feet like a formal offering.
"Good boy, Buster," Kai said, scratching behind his ears. "So, wanna get ice cream? I hear the place by the park has that flavor you're always posting about."
Maya looked in the hallway mirror. The spinach was visible. Her hair was chaos. Her dog had just tried to eat an orange.
But Kai was still smiling, and it was genuine.
"Let me grab my jacket," she said, grinning back.
Some things didn't need to be Instagram perfect to be pretty good anyway.
