Green Smile, Golden Hour

Maya's palms were sweating as she gripped the sink, staring at her reflection. Tonight was IT — her first real date with Caleb, the sophomore with the messy dark hair who sat behind her in bio.

"You look amazing," her little sister chirped from the doorway. "But..."

Maya spun around. "But what?"

"You have something in your teeth."

Panic flared. Maya had spent the last hour stressing over her outfit (finally settling on the orange sundress that made her feel confident) and perfecting her natural wave hair. She'd even forced herself to eat that stupid spinach salad at dinner because her mom said it would make her skin glow. Now she literally had spinach in her teeth?

Her iPhone buzzed. Caleb: *Hey! I'm outside. Ready?*

Maya's heart did that fluttery thing it did whenever he texted. She frantically brushed her teeth, checked her reflection three times, and grabbed her crossbody bag. The sun was setting, casting everything in that perfect golden hour lighting that made even her suburban street look cinematic.

She stepped outside and there he was, leaning against his dad's old Honda, phone in hand. The moment their eyes met, her anxiety melted into something warmer. Something real.

"Hey," he said, that crooked smile making her stomach flip.

"Hey yourself." Maya matched his energy, feeling the nervous excitement building in her chest. They were going to the downtown gelato place, walking distance from his house. No parental drivers, no awkward supervision.

But as they started walking, Caleb's phone buzzed. Again. And again. His friends were blowing up his group chat, probably making jokes about him finally going on a date. Maya's stomach tightened. She hated how social media turned everything into a performance.

Then her phone buzzed too. Her best friend group: *HAVE FUN OMG TELL US EVERYTHING*

Caleb groaned, rolling his eyes. "My friends are being obnoxious. They want me to live-stream the date or something dumb."

Maya laughed. "Mine too. They think I'm going to ghost them the moment I have a boyfriend."

"Boyfriend?" Caleb repeated, raising an eyebrow. "Is that what this is?"

Heat rushed to her cheeks. "I mean... isn't it?"

He stopped walking and turned to face her. The streetlights flickered on, creating a halo around them. "I'd be cool with that. If you would."

Maya's smile broke wide, and she realized in that moment she didn't care about the perfect photos or the gossip or whatever anyone was saying in those endless group chats. She was just here, in her orange dress, with spinach successfully nowhere to be found, palms slightly sweaty but heart completely full.

"Yeah," she said. "I'd be cool with that too."

They kept walking, their phones finally silenced in their pockets, leaving space for something real to begin.
