Green Lies and Bear Hugs
Maya's life wasn't supposed to turn into a spinach-infested nightmare, but here she was, shoving another forkful of the green stuff into her mouth while Julian watched.
"You're literally a chef," Julian said, eyes widening as he leaned across the cafeteria table. "You made this samosa from scratch?"
Maya swallowed, fighting the urge to gag. She was many things—awkward, overthinking, perpetually single—but a chef? That was brand new. The samosa had come from Trader Joe's freezer section. The spinach inside was apparently her enemy now.
"Yeah," she lied, Julian's dimpled smile making it weirdly easy. "My mom's recipe."
This was fine. This was normal. Everyone embellished to impress people they'd been DMing for three weeks, right?
"Dude, you have to come to my mom's birthday dinner next Saturday," Julian said. "She loves authentic homemade food. I told her about you."
Maya's spinach rebellion threatened to revolt. "Saturday?"
"Please don't bail." Julian's expression shifted into something softer. "I really want you there. Like, as my... friend."
The word hung between them, charged and uncertain. Maya's heart did that stupid fluttery thing it always did when he looked at her like that.
"I'll be there," she heard herself say.
What followed was three days of YouTube tutorials, two failed attempts at dough that turned out like cardboard, and one very emotional phone call with her grandmother. By Saturday, Maya had produced samosas that were... presentable. Not chef-quality, but definitely not from a freezer aisle.
Julian's house smelled like cinnamon and something she couldn't place. His mom hugged her immediately. "The famous chef!"
Maya's face burned. "I—"
"Hey everyone!" A girl burst through the back door, wearing what looked like a giant brown bear head. "Costume shop finally let me borrow this for the party!"
"My sister, Chloe," Julian explained, deadpan. "She's the bear now. We don't question it."
Chloe lumbered into the kitchen in the bear costume, snout nearly knocking over a vase. "Which one of you is the samosa genius?"
Maya froze. The moment of truth. She could hand over the container, let them praise her cooking, and never mention the three instructional videos she'd binge-watched. Or...
"They're not amazing," Maya said, voice barely above a whisper. "Actually, they're kind of my first time making anything from scratch. I'm still learning."
Chloe's bear head tilted. "Wait, you made these while learning?"
"Yeah. I wanted to make something good for the party."
"That's so much cooler than being already good," Chloe said. "Teach me your ways, samosa wisdom keeper."
Julian's mom squeezed Maya's shoulder. "Honey, honesty is the best ingredient."
Julian was grinning at her across the table, and suddenly Maya didn't feel like a fraud anymore. She felt like someone who'd tried something scary and awkward and somehow landed on her feet.
The bear high-fived her with a giant fuzzy paw. "Spinach and honesty? We're keeping this one."
