Green in the Teeth, Glitter on the Cheeks

Maya smoothed down her dress for the tenth time, her reflection staring back with those sharp, winged eyeliner flicks she'd practiced all week. The fox-eye look was trending on TikTok, and if she was going to her first high school house party, she was going to slay.

"You look fire, babe," her little brother Leo called from the hallway, way too enthusiastic. "Is that spinach in your teeth?"

Maya's heart dropped. She scrambled to the bathroom mirror, frantically checking. "You little—there's no spinach! I haven't even eaten yet!"

Leo cackled, disappearing into his room with their cat Mochi trailing after him. "Got you. You're so easy."

Maya grabbed her phone, her hands shaking slightly. The group chat was blowing up.

*party starts in 20 where r u*

*everyone's already here*

*maya ???*

She grabbed her backpack, checking one last time. Lip gloss? Check. Emergency mints? Check. Confidence? Working on it.

The party was at Jordan's house—Jordan, who'd smiled at her in chem lab on Tuesday, whose hoodie she'd been borrowing in her imagination for weeks. The thought made her stomach do gymnastics.

When she arrived, music thumped through the walls. The house was packed with people she'd known since middle school but felt she'd never really *known*, you know? Like, who were these people outside of 8 AM classes and awkward hallway run-ins?

"Maya! You made it!" Jordan materialized through the crowd, holding a red solo cup. "You look—wow. Different. Good different."

"Thanks," she managed, her voice barely above the bass. "Your party's sick."

They ended up on the back porch, away from the chaos. The air was cool, and for the first time all night, Maya's shoulders relaxed. They talked about everything and nothing—teachers who gave too much homework, dreams of moving somewhere real after graduation, the way high school felt simultaneously like forever and not enough time.

"I'm just saying," Jordan laughed, "my mom made this spinach dip earlier and I literally can't stop eating it. Want some?"

Maya hesitated. She'd been so worried about her appearance all night, but Jordan's easy laugh made something click. Why was she overthinking everything?

"Yeah," she said, actually smiling now. "Actually, yeah."

They spent the rest of the night on that porch, stealing dip and sharing secrets, while somewhere inside, Leo would've been proud of his sister—she was finally, actually, showing up.

Later, walking home under streetlights with Mochi waiting on the porch rail like she'd been there all along, Maya caught her reflection in a darkened window. The fox-eye makeup had smudged a little. Her hair was messy. She'd had spinach dip on three separate occasions.

She'd never felt more like herself.
