Green Hair Summer
Maya's hair was supposed to be ocean blue—a perfect aesthetic for her beach-themed TikTok era. Instead, she was staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, horror-struck, as her once-brown hair now resembled something between pond scum and that weird lime Jell-O nobody eats at school cafeteria.
"This is fine," she whispered to herself, lying through her teeth. "It's... unique. Edgy. Totally on purpose."
Her little brother, Leo, poked his head in. "Whoa. Did you get in a fight with a salad?"
Maya grabbed a towel and threw it at him. "Get out, Leo! It's supposed to be sea foam green! It'll settle!"
But it didn't settle. By morning, her hair had somehow morphed into an even more tragic shade of swamp water. Her phone was blowing up with texts from her best friend, Chloe, who'd already posted about their pool party that afternoon.
Her mom, trying to help, made things worse. "I read that spinach masks can fix botched hair color. Let's try it!"
An hour later, Maya sat at the kitchen island while her mom slathered puréed spinach and coconut oil into her hair. The smell alone was a social crime. Green juice dripped down her forehead, staining her skin. She looked like she'd lost a battle with a smoothie bowl.
"This is so low," Maya groaned. "I'm literally going to have to homeschool. Move countries. Change my identity."
Her phone buzzed again. Chloe: bro where r u?? ppl r asking abt u!!
Maya's stomach twisted. This was it. The end of her social life. She'd be known as Spinach Head forever.
But then her phone chimed with a DM from Ethan—the cute junior she'd been low-key flirting with all semester.
Ethan: hey! saw u weren't at the party yet. everything ok? wanna hang by the water later? my friends have that boat dock on the lake 😏
Maya froze. He was inviting her. Her. Currently disguised as a vegetable.
Her mom caught her expression. "What?"
Maya stared at the message, then at her ridiculous reflection in the microwave door. Something shifted. Maybe it was the exhaustion, or maybe it was just... not caring anymore.
"You know what?" Maya stood up, green hair dripping spinach everywhere. "I'm going to that party. Like this."
"You sure?" Her mom looked hopeful but nervous.
"Yeah. If they can't handle me at my spinach, they don't deserve me at my... whatever color I end up."
She jumped in the pool at Chloe's house fully clothed, watching the green rinse away into the water, creating swirling patterns of emerald and aquamarine. Everyone stared at first. Then someone yelled, "That's actually kinda sick though?"
By sunset, three other people had asked for the "spinach hair tutorial." Maya sat on the pool edge, hair wet and weirdly perfect, talking to Ethan, who thought her "failed dye job story" was hilarious.
Sometimes the worst disasters made the best origin stories.
