Green Hair Don't Care

Maya's reputation as the swim team's star was practically unbreakable until the spinach incident. She'd been scrolling through eco-beauty TikToks at 2 AM, convinced that natural ingredients would transform her look. The video promised vibrant green hair using boiled spinach — perfect for sectionals, right?

Three hours later, Maya stared at her reflection in horror. Her hair wasn't vibrant green. It was swamp-brown with suspicious patches of something resembling pond scum. Her perfect curls were now a brittle, spinach-scented disaster.

"You look like you went swimming in a salad," her little brother announced.

Maya's swim cap would hide it during practice, but sectionals meant team photos, parents, and Tyler — the cute diver she'd been awkwardly flirting with for weeks. She grabbed her brother's beanie, ignoring that it read "I ❤️ MOM," and booked it to school.

The day was a nightmare of hat-clad evasion until lunch, when her best friend Jess pulled her into the cafeteria line. "Just own it, Maya. Rock the swamp look."

Easy for Jess to say. Her hair was perfect, naturally wavy, the kind that cascaded in slow motion. Meanwhile, Maya was contemplating swimming into the Pacific and never coming back.

Then Tyler appeared, sliding into the seat across from her. His dark hair fell over his eyes in that way that made her stomach do backflips. "Hey, nice hat," he said, and Maya's face burned hotter than the spinach disaster.

But then he leaned closer, dropping his voice. "I heard about your hair. My sister tried that spinach thing last month. Looked like a wet dog for two weeks."

Maya blinked. "Wait — you knew?"

"Maya, you've been wearing that hat inside. In May. It's kind of obvious." His eyes crinkled. "Also, there's spinach in your teeth."

She scrambled for a napkin, but he was already laughing. Not mean laughing. The good kind. The kind that made his nose scrunch up.

"You're still coming to the party tonight, right?" he asked. "Hat or no hat. Swamp hair or not."

Something clicked. Maya pulled off the hat, letting her spinach-scented disaster spring free. The cafeteria went quiet for approximately three seconds before someone shouted, "YAAAS SWAMP QUEEN."

"That's my cue," Tyler said, standing up. "See you tonight, Maya. Don't wash it. It's got character."

She watched him walk away, spinach in her teeth and chaos on her head, and realized maybe character was better than perfection anyway. Plus, she'd definitely be swimming in something other than chlorinated water tonight — possibly her dignity, but hey, that's high school.
