Green Hair Disaster

Maya's hair was supposed to be chocolate brown. Instead, after a DIY dye job she'd attempted because her mom said salon highlights were too expensive, it looked like she'd dipped her head in a bucket of spinach.

"It's not that bad," her best friend Chloe lied, wincing.

"I look like a vegetable," Maya groaned, staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. "Tomorrow's pool party at Jake's house and I look like Swamp Thing's cousin."

Chloe shrugged. "Just wear a hat?"

"It's a POOL party, Chlo."

"Right. Good point."

The next day, Maya contemplated faking sick. But Jake—the cute junior she'd been crushing on since September—had invited her personally. His Instagram story had been promotion enough: huge pool, epic slip-n-slide, his older brother's DJ setup. No way was she missing it.

She spent twenty minutes styling her hair, trying to make the greenish-brown disaster look like an intentional aesthetic. It didn't work. At all.

When she walked into Jake's backyard, the smell of chlorine hit her. People were everywhere—some in the pool, others eating pizza, a group playing volleyball. Jake spotted her and waved.

"Hey! You made it!" He swam over to the pool edge. "Come in!"

Maya hesitated. Chlorine was notorious for turning hair weird colors. Her hair was already a disaster.

"I'm good," she called. "Maybe later."

Chloe, traitor that she was, was already splashing around with Jake's friends. Maya grabbed a slice of pizza and tried to look chill, like she wasn't having an internal crisis about her hair.

"Spinach dip?" Jake's mom offered, appearing beside her with a platter.

Maya jumped. "Oh, thanks, Mrs. Chen." She took some, trying to balance the plate while simultaneously awkward-waving at Jake, who was now doing cannonballs.

And then—because the universe hated her—she tripped.

The spinach dip flew. The plate went spinning. Maya flailed.

She didn't fall into the pool. No, that would have been too simple. Instead, she crashed directly into Jake, who'd just climbed out of the water, sending them both tumbling onto the wet concrete.

Spinach dip everywhere. On Jake's swimsuit. All over her arms. And somehow, some had gotten into her hair.

Jake stared at her, dripping wet, with spinach in his hair. Maya stared back, mortified.

Then he started laughing.

"Did we just get attacked by dip?"

Maya's face burned. "I am so sorry."

"Dude, that was epic." He stood up, extending a hand. "You coming in or what?"

She hesitated. "My hair..."

"Your hair is awesome. It's like, green-ish? Very mermaid vibes." He grinned. "Come on."

Maya took his hand and jumped into the cool blue water, spinach dip and all.

Sometimes, she thought, floating on her back as Jake splashed her, disaster was just the universe's way of pushing you toward something good.
