Green Hair, Dead Inside

Marcus stared at his reflection in the bathroom mirror, his normally brown hair now a radioactive shade of green that somehow looked worse in fluorescent lighting. At 2 AM, watching those TikTok hair dye tutorials seemed like genius. Now, at 7:15 AM before first period, it felt like a certified brainrot moment.

"You look like you died three days ago," his little sister commented, eyeing him judgmentally over her cereal. "No offense."

"None taken," Marcus muttered, splashing cold water on his face. He'd been up half the night overthinking his text messages to Sarah, the cute junior from his chemistry class. Now he was officially a zombie—dark circles, zero impulse control, and hair that screamed "I'm having an existential crisis."

The walk to school was a nightmare. Every head turned. Every whisper felt amplified. Marcus kept his hood up, counting down the minutes until he could escape back to his room. This was it. His social life, officially deceased. He'd be known as "that guy with the green hair incident" until graduation.

But then lunch rolled around, and something unexpected happened. Sarah sat across from him, her eyes lighting up with genuine amusement instead of judgment.

"No way," she said, grinning. "Did you do that on purpose? It's actually kinda iconic."

Marcus blinked. "You think?"

"Yeah! It's like you're not even trying anymore. I respect that energy." She tapped his phone. "Send me those chemistry notes? I was basically a zombie in class today."

Walking home later, Marcus felt lighter. The green hair was still a disaster, but somehow, it was okay. He wasn't trying to be perfect anymore.

His dog Buster met him at the door, tail wagging like Marcus was the best thing that ever happened to him. No judgment about the green catastrophe. Just pure, unconditional love.

"At least someone still likes me," Marcus said, scratching Buster's ears. Maybe being imperfect wasn't the worst thing in the world. Maybe it was actually kinda the point.
