Green Hair and the Social Pyramid

The curls were supposed to be beachy blonde highlights. Instead, my hair turned neon green.

"Maya, your hair is..." Lisa couldn't even finish the sentence.

"A disaster? A crime against humanity?" I flopped onto my bed. "I'm never leaving my room again."

"It's giving... very mermaidcore?" Lisa tried. "Also, Jake's pool party is in two hours. We're still going, right?"

Jake Torres. The guy I've been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade. Also the guy at the top of our school's social pyramid - you know, that invisible hierarchy where popular kids sit at the peak and everyone else just tries not to fall into the abyss.

I almost said no. But then I remembered how Jake had smiled at me in the hallway last week, and how I'd been waiting for this moment all summer.

"Fine," I groaned. "But I'm wearing a hat."

The hat lasted exactly thirty-seven seconds after we arrived at Jake's pool party. Someone cannonballed into the pool, and splash - goodbye hat, hello neon green curls frizzing out like I'd stuck my finger in an electrical socket.

I wanted to die. I could feel everyone staring. But then Jake emerged from the pool, water dripping from his hair, and his eyes went wide.

"No way," he said, grinning. "Maya?"

I braced myself for the roast.

"Your hair looks sick," he said instead. "Like, actually iconic."

Wait, what?

Before I could process, someone whispered, "Isn't that the girl who runs that anonymous crush account?"

Oh no. My secret. The @SchoolSpy_ account where I'd been posting anonymously about everyone's crushes. I'd been so careful, but somehow, someone had figured it out.

My face burned hotter than the sun.

But then Jake stepped closer. "You're SchoolSpy? That's legendary." He lowered his voice. "I was hoping you'd post about me."

My stomach did a backflip. "You knew?"

"I had my suspicions." His smile made my knees weak. "Also, I might have been doing some spying of my own - on your Instagram. Your photography is actually insane."

The night got weirder. Jake's mom brought out her famous bear-shaped cookies (don't ask), and we ended up sitting on the pool edge, knees touching in the water, talking about everything from music to how much we both hated climbing the social pyramid when we just wanted to be real.

"My green hair was an accident," I admitted.

"Best accident ever," Jake said.

And maybe - just maybe - the perfect summer surprise wasn't becoming popular or getting the guy. It was realizing that the coolest version of yourself is the one who's not afraid to be a little messy, a little unexpected, and a little gloriously green.
