Green & Gold Summer

Maya stood in the kitchen, staring at the suspiciously green concoction her mom had blended. It smelled like lawn clippings and tropical despair.

"Drink up, mija. It's got papaya, spinach, and basically every vitamin you need."

"Mom, I'm fifteen. I need sleep, not a salad in a cup."

Maya's summer was off to a catastrophic start. Her friends were posting beach photos from their vacays while she was stuck at home, grounded after the Great Phone Bill Incident (may she never live down that TikTok addiction).

She took a tentative sip. Surprisingly, it didn't taste like sadness. It tasted... weirdly refreshing?

Her phone buzzed — a group chat notification. The squad was at the mall without her. Again.

Maya stared at the smoothie. Why was she trying so hard to be someone she wasn't? Last year, she'd dyed her hair pink to match Riley. She'd worn crop tops she hated because Jen said they were "a vibe." She'd spent all her vitamin D-deficient existence trying to photosynthesize into someone she wasn't.

The smoothie was actually kind of good. Sweet from the papaya, earthy from the spinach. A balance, not a compromise.

"Hey Mom?"

"Sí, mija?"

"Can you teach me to make this tomorrow?"

Her mom's eyebrows raised. "The girl who called my green juice 'swamp water' last week?"

"People change."

Maya finished the smoothie and posted a selfie — no filter, hair in a messy bun, green smoothie mustache and all. Caption: "Living my best basic life."

Riley texted back instantly: "Omg look at you being all aesthetic 😂"

Jen added: "Wait send recipe"

Maybe this summer wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe the green stuff was exactly what she needed.
