Green Between the Teeth

papayacatspinach

Maya's first week at Northwood High and she'd already learned the universal law of high school cafeterias: table selection was everything. She'd been hovering near the entrance with her tray, doing the awkward new-kid shuffle, when a wave from Jordan—the cute junior who'd helped her find her locker—saved her from eternal social purgatory.

"New girl! Grab a seat," Jordan called, gesturing to the circular table where his crew sat. Maya practically teleported over, sliding in next to him like she'd been part of the squad forever.

That's when everyone started staring at her lunch. She'd brought sliced papaya from home because her mom was on a tropical fruit kick, but apparently papaya was social suicide at Northwood. Jordan's friend Chloe raised an eyebrow like Maya'd just confessed to watching Cocomelon unironically.

"Is that...papaya?" Chloe asked, with the same tone you'd use for "is that roadkill?"

But the REAL disaster struck when Maya smiled through the awkwardness. Jordan's eyes went wide, and he leaned in close. "Dude, you've got—"

He pointed at his own teeth. Maya's hand flew to her mouth. Sure enough, a massive piece of spinach from her morning smoothie was wedged between her front teeth like a green architectural disaster. She'd been walking around with it ALL MORNING. That locker help? That hallway wave? Jordan had been staring at the spinach the whole time.

"Since first period," Jordan whispered, which somehow made it worse and better simultaneously.

The table erupted. Not mean laughter, but the kind where everyone's dying because they'd ALL noticed and nobody had said anything. Even Chloe was cracking up. "We were literally having a betting pool about when you'd notice," she admitted. "Jasmine won third lunch."

Maya should have wanted to evaporate, but instead she found herself laughing too. Hard. The kind where you snort and your eyes water. When Jordan handed her a napkin, their fingers brushed, and she caught his tiny smile—like maybe the spinach incident had made her human instead of just the mysterious new girl.

"You're lucky my cat didn't see you first," Maya joked, wiping the evidence away. "Mr. Whiskers would've knocked this whole tray over just to prove a point."

"Mr. Whiskers?" Jordan choked out. "That's literally the most basic cat name ever."

"Excuse me, he's very distinguished," Maya said, then ruined it by adding, "He also answers to 'Furry Little Demon' when he's knocking glasses off the counter."

The whole table lost it again. This time Maya was laughing WITH them, not at herself.

"So," Jordan said, glancing at her papaya, "tomorrow you're bringing something normal, right?"

Maya grinned, feeling the weird gap where her spinach used to be. "Nah. Tomorrow I'm bringing mango. See how you guys handle THAT."

The table groaned, but Jordan was still smiling, and Maya figured that even with spinach in her teeth, papaya on her tray, and a cat named Mr. Whiskers at home, she might actually be okay here.
