Green Between My Teeth
The padel court at the rec center felt like the stage where my social life would officially die. Sweat pooled in my palms as I gripped the racket, watching Brittani and her perfect topknot laugh on the opposite side of the net. My little sister Maia had dressed up as a sphinx for some school project earlier that day, complete with cardboard wings and gold eyeliner, and I'd somehow promised to help her with it between matches.
"Leo, you got something in your teeth," my best friend Marcus hissed from the sidelines.
I froze. My mom's green smoothies had struck again. I excused myself to the bathroom, frantically trying to dislodge the spinach from my front teeth while my phone buzzed nonstop. Brittani had posted a story about the tournament—everyone was watching.
When I returned, this golden retriever that had been wandering the rec center all week somehow got onto the court. Someone squealed. The dog bolted straight toward Brittani, who shrieked and dropped her phone. Marcus high-fived me for some reason. The game was completely derailed. Coach blew the whistle while someone tried to catch the dog with a bag of chips.
The sphinx costume broke somewhere in all the chaos—Maia was devastated—but Brittani thought the whole thing was hilarious. She came over afterwards while I was helping Maia pick up cardboard pieces.
"That dog was chaos," she said, "but honestly? That spinach situation? Way worse."
I stared at her, mortified.
"I'm kidding," she laughed, swiping her palm across her forehead like she was exhausted. "Actually, your sister's sphinx costume was kinda iconic. You want to grab boba later?"
Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the ones that finally break the ice. And that's the story of how I learned that sweating through your palms, spinach teeth, and sphinx-costume disasters can actually somehow lead to your first date with the girl you've been crushing on since seventh grade.
