Graying at the Edges
Elena's gray hair, usually hidden beneath expensive dye appointments, was showing at the temples again. She ran across the padel court, her breath coming in sharp bursts, the racquet almost slipping from her sweat-slicked palms. At forty-six, she was the oldest woman in the Sunday morning league by fifteen years.
Across the net, Sarah—twenty-six, with that careless cascade of blonde hair that Elena remembered having once—laughed at something Elena's husband had said. Marco had been joining these games for three months now, ever since his promotion. Something about networking, he'd said. Elena knew better.
"You're running yourself into the ground, El," Marco had told her that morning, watching her apply concealer to the dark circles under her eyes. He hadn't touched her in six weeks.
The game ended. Elena headed for the clubhouse alone, leaving them behind. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, she saw the fox that had been appearing in the garden lately—a russet shadow moving through the ornamental hedges. Cunning. Resourceful. Beautiful.
Sarah called it "The Fox Club"—the married men who gathered here Sunday mornings, leaving wives at home or dragging them along as cover. Elena had found the WhatsApp group on Marco's phone: eight men, four single women, conversations that continued long after the games ended.
She ordered a gin and tonic at ten in the morning. The bartender didn't judge.
"Your husband's quite good," Sarah said, sliding onto the stool beside her. Too close. "At padel, I mean."
Elena studied her reflection in the mirror behind the bar: the emerging gray, the fine lines, the woman she'd become versus the one she'd been. Sarah was waiting for a reaction, some flash of jealousy.
Instead, Elena smiled. "Yes," she said, finishing her drink. "He's excellent at games." She stood up, leaving her racquet by the door. Outside, the fox slipped into the woods. Something told Elena it wouldn't be back—nothing stayed in one place forever. She'd book an appointment to dye her hair tomorrow. But not today.
