Goldfish Wisdom
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in the disaster that used to be her hair. The TikTok hack said papaya would make it "silky smooth," but now she looked like she'd stuck her finger in an electrical socket. Prom was in three hours.
"You have got to be kidding me," she groaned, letting her forehead thud against the bathroom mirror.
Finn, her pet goldfish, swam to the front of his bowl on the counter, bubbles escaping his mouth like tiny judgments. His orange scales caught the light, almost mocking her with their perfection.
"Don't look at me like that, Finn. At least YOU don't have to worry about what people think of your fins."
Her phone buzzed. Group chat blowing up with pre-prom hype. Maya's stomach did that familiar twist — the one that happened whenever she thought about walking into the gym alone, while everyone else had dates and perfect hair and Instagram-worthy lives.
She grabbed her makeup bag, determined to salvage something. Anything. If she couldn't fix the hair, maybe she could distraction-method her way through the night.
Finn did a little flip, his tail catching the bathroom light.
Maya paused. "You know what? You're right."
She stared at her reflection again. Really looked. The papaya might have turned her hair into a frizz explosion, but her eyes were still bright. Her smile, when she let it happen, was genuine. And maybe — just maybe — showing up to prom with ridiculous hair was better than not showing up at all.
She washed out as much papaya as she could, threw her hair into a messy bun with intention this time, and slipped on her dress. She grabbed her phone and snapped a selfie with Finn. #RIP to my hair but we move.
"Wish me luck, fish," she said, heading for the door.
Finn swam to the front of his bowl, watching her go. And Maya walked into prom like she owned the place, papaya disaster and all.
