Goldfish Protocol
The party was already mid-swing when Maya's iPhone died at 11:47 PM. Exactly. She checked against the microwave clock because yeah, she's that extra about time.
"You're not gonna believe this," she groaned to Leo, who was currently failing spectacularly at beer pong. "My phone is literally dead. At a party. This is social suicide."
Leo shrugged, already moving on to his next failed shot. "Just be in the moment, bestie. Whatever that means."
Maya rolled her eyes so hard she practically saw her own brain. Be in the moment. What moment? The moment where everyone else was capturing content for their feeds and she was standing there like a cryptid who didn't exist online?
She escaped to the backyard, following the family's elderly golden retriever - Barnaby, because apparently old people names for dogs were a thing now. Barnaby led her to a tiny pond by the garage, where a lone goldfish swam in endless circles.
"Same," Maya whispered. "Just swimming in circles, bro. No idea what's happening."
That's when it hit - literally hit. Lightning splintered the sky above them, so bright she saw spots, thunder shaking the ground beneath her canvas slip-ons. The storm she'd been ignoring in her group chat finally arrived.
Barnaby whimpered and pressed against her leg. Maya dropped to her knees in the grass, wrapping her arms around the dog's warm, solid body. For three seconds of the most intense lightning she'd ever seen, everything made sense.
Her iPhone was dead. She was kneeling in wet grass in someone's backyard, hugging a dog she'd met twenty minutes ago, watching a goldfish navigate its tiny universe. And nobody knew. Nobody was filming it. Nobody was gonna see it and think damn, Maya's living her best life.
The goldfish surfaced, gulped air, and swam on.
"You know what?" Maya said to the fish, then to Barnaby, then to herself. "This is actually valid."
When she got back inside, Leo found her immediately. "Where were you? You missed Tyler doing a keg stand!"
"Outside," she said, pulling her dead iPhone from her pocket. "With Barnaby. And a goldfish. Just vibing."
Leo stared at her. "You're so weird."
"I know, right?" She grinned. "It's kind of a mood."
