Goldfish Promises
Maya's hat sat crooked on her head, a beanie from her middle school emo phase that she refused to throw away. It was her armor against parties like this—Sophie's basement, strobe lights, enough people to trigger her social anxiety. She'd spent the first twenty minutes hovering near the snack table, pretending to be fascinated by a goldfish bowl centerpiece.
"You know they have like three-second memories," said Liam, sliding up beside her. "That's gotta be nice. Just forget everything immediately."
Maya jumped. Liam Chen, swim team captain, wearing a snapback backwards like he owned the place. "The goldfish thing is a myth," she said, then mentally face-palmed. Way to sound like a walking Wikipedia entry, Maya.
But Liam laughed. "No way. You just won an argument with goldfish facts. That's actually kind of fire."
Her heart did this weird flutter thing. Then Sophie appeared, grabbing Maya's hand. "OMG, Maya's getting her palm read! Lisa's aunt taught her!"
Before Maya could protest, she was dragged to the corner where Lisa was solemnly tracing lines on people's palms. Lisa studied Maya's hand like it contained the secrets to college admissions.
"You're going to have a big adventure soon," Lisa pronounced dramatically. "And you'll meet someone... unexpected."
The room went suddenly quiet. Liam was watching her from across the basement, still wearing that backwards hat, smiling like she wasn't the weirdest person there.
The goldfish swam lazily in its bowl, oblivious to the momentous nature of sixteen-year-old social dynamics. Maya adjusted her beanie, feeling something shift inside her—not an adventure, maybe, but the start of something.
"Hey," Liam said, appearing again with two cups of punch. "Want to help me move this goldfish somewhere safer? Sophie's brother almost knocked it over."
And just like that, Maya's armor softened. She wasn't just the girl in the hat anymore, hiding at parties. She was Maya, goldfish rescuer, palm-reading subject, possibly starting something real.
"Yeah," she said. "Let's save the fish."
