Goldfish & Papaya Summer

Maya's Hawaiian shirt screamed tourist, even though she'd lived in California her whole life. The papaya-print fabric was Raven's idea—a joke that wasn't funny anymore.

"You're literally overthinking this," Raven said, adjusting her bikini straps. "It's just a pool party. Swim, socialize, survive."

Easier said than done. Maya's stomach did backflips as they approached Jordan's house. Jordan, who'd somehow become popular overnight. Jordan, whose smile made Maya forget basic English.

The backyard looked like something from Instagram. People she'd known since middle school now seemed like strangers. Someone blasted music that vibrated in Maya's teeth. She spotted Jordan near the grilled fruit station—guess serving papaya was peak aesthetic now.

"Maya!" Jordan waved, tanned arm slicing through the humid air. "Try this, it's actually fire."

Maya's brain short-circuited. She reached for the papaya, but her elbow knocked into a cooler. Water splashed everywhere—on her shorts, on the ground, on Jordan's expensive-looking sandals.

Everyone stared. The music kept bumping, indifferent to her social suicide.

"My bad," Maya squeaked.

But Jordan just laughed. "Bro, it's just water. Wait—" They pointed to something flopping in the puddle. "Is that a goldfish?"

A literal goldfish, orange and pathetic, gasped on the concrete.

"That was for the centerpiece," some girl named Taylor said, already filming. "My mom's gonna kill me."

Maya dropped to her knees, scooping the fish into her hands. It was slippery and weirdly warm. She sprinted to the pool and gently released it. The goldfish darted away like it had been waiting for this moment all summer.

She turned around, water dripping from her chin, expecting laughter. Instead, Jordan was grinning.

"That was... kind of legendary, actually."

"I ruined everything."

"Nah." Jordan's eyes crinkled. "You saved Gerald."

"Gerald?"

"The goldfish. We named him Gerald. He was doomed anyway—Taylor's mom was gonna flush him after the party. You're literally his hero."

Maya started laughing, couldn't stop. The ridiculousness of it all—her ugly papaya shirt, the spilled water, saving a fish named Gerald from certain toilet doom.

Raven appeared beside her, eyes wide. "Did you just... cause a scene? And somehow make it iconic?"

Jordan slid closer. "So, papaya print, huh? Bold choice."

"Don't ask."

"I wasn't gonna." Jordan's smile softened. "I was gonna ask if you want to help me find Gerald later. Make sure he's living his best fish life."

The air between them shifted, charged with something new. Maya's anxiety melted into the pool water around her ankles.

"Sure," she said, finally breathing. "But only if there's more papaya."
