Goldfish & Papaya Lessons

Maya smoothed her borrowed sundress, feeling like a fraud. The invitation said "casual dinner," but when your crush's mom is a food blogger, casual means locally-sourced everything and conversation about sustainable agriculture.

"You're staring at the spinach," Liam whispered, leaning closer. Maya jumped, almost knocking over her water glass.

"I'm... admiring its vibrancy?" she tried. Smooth. Real smooth.

His mom, Chen, beamed from across the table. "We grew it in the backyard! Liam helped plant the seeds. Remember, honey?"

Liam's ears turned pink. Maya filed that away: tough-guy lacrosse captain also gardens with his mom. Adorable.

Then came the main course. Grilled papaya with... was that cilantro?

"It's acquired taste," Chen said cheerfully.

Maya's phone buzzed. Unknown number. She sneak-checked under the table: EMERGENCY. SHELBY NEEDS YOU. THE DOG ATE YOUR PROJECT.

Her stomach dropped. Shelby's dog Buster had consumed her history final — a cardboard diorama of the Great Depression. Due tomorrow.

"Everything okay?" Liam asked.

"Family emergency," Maya choked out. "I have to... go."

She practically ran out, dodging questions about dessert. Her phone rang — Shelby sobbing about Buster's dietary choices and the goldfish crackers glued to what remained of the Hooverville.

"It's fine," Maya lied, pacing in her driveway. "I'll fix it."

But she was staring at the papaya in her parents' kitchen, the one she'd grabbed as a consolation snack. And suddenly she was laughing so hard she had to sit down. Here she was, trying so hard to impress Liam's family with sophistication she didn't have, while her best friend was dealing with a dog who'd literally eaten her homework.

The goldfish crackers. The papaya she'd fled with. The spinach in Liam's garden. It was all ridiculous.

Her phone dinged. Liam: Sorry about dinner. My mom can be intense. Also, you left your sandals.

Maya typed back: Emergency at home. But I had fun. Also, tell your mom the papaya was... an experience.

Liam: lol. Next time, we're getting pizza. No locally-sourced anything.

Maya grinned, grabbing a real spinach leaf from her own fridge. Some things didn't need to be complicated. Like friends who covered for you when you made a scene, and boys who understood when you bailed on dinner because of a dog-related crisis.

She texted Shelby: On my way with glue. And maybe we stop for ice cream.

Some words were harder than others. But some things? Those were easy.
