Goldfish Operations
Maya's bedroom was command central for Operation Goldfish. Not that anyone knew. To her parents, she was just doing homework. To her crush, Sam, she didn't exist. But to her Instagram following, she was @maya_unfiltered – a totally different person with better hair, cooler friends, and a life that didn't involve spending Friday nights talking to a goldfish.
"You think he saw my story?" Maya asked, sliding her phone across the glass tank. Bubbles the goldfish ignored her, as usual. "Rude."
Her phone buzzed. Heart doing that annoying fluttery thing, Maya checked. Sam had viewed her story. The one where she pretended to be at a party she wasn't invited to. Because nothing says "I'm cool" like lying about a party you're watching from your bedroom.
Outside, lightning cracked the sky open. Perfect. The universe was mocking her.
Another buzz. Unknown number: "Nice party. I was there too."
Maya froze. Who was this? Some rando detective? Sam?
Her finger hovered over the screen. This was it. Her social sabotage strategy had backfired. She'd become her own spy and enemy simultaneously.
"Well, Bubbles," she whispered, "at least you won't tell anyone I'm a fraud."
The goldfish swam to the glass, staring at her with those weird buggy eyes. Then, impossibly, it nudged her phone case where she'd taped a tiny mirror. Something caught the light – a reflection from her window. Someone WAS outside. Watching.
Lightning flashed again. Maya's Instagram notification lit up: Sam started following you.
The person below raised their phone. Sam.
Maya's breath caught. He'd been "spying" on her stories for weeks. Their fake lives had been colliding this whole time.
She grabbed her phone, thumbs shaking. "Want to come inside? I have homework. And a goldfish who needs witnesses."
His response: "Finally."
Bubbles did a victory lap around the castle. Operation Goldfish was complete, but real life was just beginning.
