Goldfish in the Summer Pool
Arthur sat on the back porch, his favorite fedora resting on the knee of his tan trousers. At seventy-eight, he'd learned that some things deserved to be savored slowly—like the way the morning light caught the ripples in his swimming pool, or the memory of Eleanor's laughter when she'd discovered something delightful.
"Grandpa! Look!" little Lily called from the pool's edge. "A goldfish!"
Arthur smiled, adjusting his hat. The grandchildren had arrived yesterday for their summer visit, bringing with them the chaos and joy that made his house feel like a home again. He'd noticed the goldfish earlier that morning—orange and graceful, swimming amid the chlorine and concrete. One of the children must have released it from the bowl they'd won at the fair.
"Your grandmother would have loved this," Arthur said, joining Lily at the water's edge. "She always said life surprises us when we least expect it."
He remembered running with Eleanor through this very backyard forty years ago, their children chasing fireflies while they raced to see who could reach the old oak tree first. Those were the days before the daily vitamin regimen, before the doctor's appointments, before the quiet that now filled the house.
But this goldfish—this tiny, stubborn miracle—thriving where it didn't belong, creating ripples of wonder for grandchildren to discover. Eleanor would have called it a blessing in disguise.
"We'll need to get him a proper home," Arthur said, but he made no move to do it today. Some joys weren't meant to be solved immediately.
Later, as the family gathered for dinner, Arthur watched them all—his son and daughter, their spouses, the grandchildren laughing and passing dishes. This was his true legacy, he realized. Not the running races he'd won or the achievements he'd accumulated, but these moments of connection, these small miracles like a goldfish in a swimming pool, reminding them all to notice the unexpected beauty in ordinary days.
Eleanor would have said that was the most important vitamin of all—the one that nourishes the soul.
