Goldfish in the Storm

The plastic bag weighed heavy in Maya's hand—sloshing water, one disappointed carnival goldfish, and the crushing realization that her best friend was becoming someone she didn't recognize.

"You're not even gonna name him?" Jenna asked, not looking up from her phone. They sat on the edge of Jenna's drained pool, the third night of homecoming week. Thunder rumbled somewhere far off.

"His name is Norm. And he's probably gonna die in, like, two days anyway." Maya set the bag on the cracked concrete. "Just like this friendship."

Jenna finally looked up. Her makeup was different this year—sharper, more intentional. "Wow, dramatic much? Just because I'm spending time with the cheer squad doesn't mean—"

"It's not just the cheer squad, Jen. It's everything." Maya's voice cracked. "You ghost me in the halls, you leave me on read for three days, and then you invite me over just to ignore me? What's the point?"

"I'm NOT ignoring you!" Jenna snapped, then softened. "It's just... complicated, okay? Everything feels different this year. I'm trying to figure out who I even AM."

Lightning fractured the sky—purple-white, beautiful and terrifying. In that flash, Maya saw everything: Jenna's forced smile, the plastic bag with Norm doing tiny circles, the weight of two years of friendship hanging by a thread.

"Figure it out with them then," Maya said, standing up. "I'm done being your backup friend."

"Maya, wait—"

But she was already walking toward the gate, goldfish bag in hand, tears mixing with the first raindrops.

"At least NAME him properly!" Jenna called after her.

"His name is STORM!" Maya shouted back, as lightning split the sky again and the real storm broke loose.

The goldfish lived for three years. Storm outlasted the friendship, outlasted high school, and became Maya's reminder: some things are fragile, but sometimes the strongest things start small, swimming in circles, waiting for their moment to grow.
