Goldfish in the Palm

Maya's palms were sweating so much she was practically leaving puddles on the kitchen counter. The house party was already triggering her social anxiety like whoa, and now she was stuck holding a plastic cup of lukewarm soda while watching her ex-best friend laughing with the popular crowd across the room.

"You look like you're about to throw up," said Leo, sliding up beside her. "Wanna bail?"

Maya shook her head. "No. I need to stop being such a chicken every time Jasmine walks into a room."

Their friendship had imploded three months ago over something so stupid Maya could barely remember the details. Something about a group project, a misinterpretation, and way too many sub-tweets. Now they were strangers who shared eight years of inside jokes and childhood secrets.

Outside, lightning cracked the sky in half, illuminating the backyard through the sliding glass door. The storm had been brewing all evening, matching Maya's chaotic internal monologue.

"Hey," Leo said softly. "Remember when we were like eleven and you won that goldfish at the carnival? You named it Captain Fin and it lived for like three years."

Maya snorted. "Don't remind me. My mom made me flush it down the toilet when it died. I cried for days."

"You cried because you thought it was going to have adventures in the ocean. You were genuinely concerned about Captain Fin finding friends down there."

"I was a dramatic child," Maya admitted, finally relaxing. "But honestly? Maybe being dramatic is better than being frozen all the time."

She looked across the room again. Jasmine was heading their way, and Maya's heart did this little flip thing that was equal parts terror and hope. Maybe tonight didn't have to be about avoiding or pretending or playing it cool. Maybe it was just about being messy and human and sometimes winning goldfish at carnivals even though you know they probably won't survive the car ride home.

Maya set her cup down, wiped her palms on her jeans, and took a deep breath. "Okay. I'm gonna talk to her."

Leo bumped her shoulder. "Finally. Captain Fin would be proud."
