Goldfish in the Lightning

Maya's brother's goldfish was named Blaze. Which was ironic, because Blaze mostly did nothing but float near his plastic castle, occasionally nibbling at flakes like he was doom-scrolling.

"You're not gonna believe this," Frankie said. "My mom's actually letting me dye my hair electric blue. Tonight."

Maya felt it—that twist in her stomach. Her own mom had been giving her the hard "we'll see" for months. "That's sick, Franks. Actually sick."

So when Maya's parents went out for dinner and left her in charge of "making sure nothing happens to Blaze," she found the old bleach under the bathroom sink. Section hair. Apply bleach. Wait. She'd watched enough TikToks to fake it.

The first lightning struck just as she applied bleach to her front sections. The whole bathroom lit up, and Maya almost dropped the bowl.

"You're fine," she told herself. "Blaze is fine. Everything's fine."

She caught her reflection—bleach turning her dark hair that weird orange. This was supposed to be the moment. The new Maya, who wasn't just quiet.

But something felt off.

The goldfish floated to the top, looking at her with those bug-out eyes.

"What? You think I'm being basic?" Maya asked. "Like, what's the alternative? Keep being the girl nobody remembers is even there?"

Another lightning flash. The power died.

Maya sat on the bathroom floor in the dark, bleach still working. Her phone lit up with Frankie's text: "DUDE my hair came out SO GOOD. Send pics!!"

She rinsed out the bleach by phone flashlight. Her hair was weird patchy orange-brown. Not intentional. Not cool.

It looked ridiculous.

Maya started laughing. Because this was SO on brand. She couldn't even reinvent herself correctly.

She didn't fix it. She went to school Monday with half-orange, half-brown hair, messy and uneven and completely unapologetic.

"Did you... mean to do that?" Sarah asked in homeroom.

"Yeah," Maya said, surprising herself. "Actually, I did."

And for the first time, it wasn't a lie. The girl who always played it safe had messed up and decided to own it.

That night, Frankie FaceTimed her. "Okay, but your hair is kind of iconic though."

"It's a mess," Maya said, grinning.

"No, it's giving main character energy."

Maya looked at the goldfish.

"Yeah," she said. "I guess it kind of is."

And for the first time, she actually believed it.
