Goldfish in the Glass Tower

goldfishspybull

Elena watched the goldfish circle its bowl in the executive suite, mesmerized by its endless, pointless journey. Three years she'd spent as the corporate spy for Nexus Corp, feeding competitor secrets to her bosses, and she'd never felt more like that fish—trapped, observed, swimming in circles while someone else decided when she'd be fed.

The latest assignment had arrived via encrypted message at 3 AM: steal the merger terms from Hawthorne Industries before the board announcement. Simple enough, except Richard Hawthorne, the CEO, had made it clear during their brief, charged encounter at the industry gala that he knew exactly who she was and what she did. His hand had lingered on her lower back, his breath warm against her ear as he whispered, "I like a woman who knows what she wants, Elena. Even if she has to steal it."

Now she stood in his office, USB drive in hand, while the goldfish watched with what looked almost like judgment. Richard's bullish approach to business was legendary—he destroyed competitors, absorbed their assets, kept their executives as pets. Or so the rumor went.

"You're going to take it, aren't you?" Richard's voice came from the doorway. He didn't sound angry. He sounded like a man who'd laid a trap and was watching it spring shut.

"You knew I would."

"I counted on it." He stepped closer, close enough that she could smell his expensive cologne, something like cedar and expensive mistakes. "Those merger terms? They're fake. The real documents are encrypted on a server you'll never access. But this conversation? This is being recorded for the SEC."

Elena's stomach dropped. "You turned me in?"

"I gave you a choice, sweetheart. Swim or drown." His smile didn't reach his eyes. "You could have said no. Could have taken that job offer I mentioned at the gala. But spies don't know how to be loyal, do they? They only know how to collect information and sell it to the highest bidder."

He gestured to the fishbowl. "You think that goldfish is trapped? It has no idea there's a world beyond the glass. You do. You chose the bowl."

Elena looked at the fish, then at Richard, then at the USB drive in her hand. She dropped it on his carpet and walked out, leaving behind the encryption codes she'd memorized—his real security flaws. Let him explain those to the SEC.

Some fish eventually learned to jump the bowl after all.
