Goldfish in the Deep End
Maya felt like a literal goldfish trapped in a bowl—except the bowl was actually a crystal-clear pool, and everyone else looked like they belonged in a TikTok aesthetic video. She clutched her iPhone against her chest, scrolling through pretend messages while her bestie Kai already dove in, making friends with zero effort.
Then she saw Her.
The girl sat poolside with the confidence of someone who knew she looked good, but she wasn't posting it. Dark hair slicked back, oversized sunglasses covering her eyes, legs stretched out like she owned every square inch of concrete. The Sphinx, Maya decided instantly. No one could read her.
"You gonna stand there all day?" The Sphinx's voice cut through the splash of laughter. "Or actually get in the water?"
Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to function. "I'm good."
"Boring." The Sphinx pulled down her sunglasses just enough to reveal eyes the color of honeyed amber. "I'm Riley, by the way. And you're sweating. In 85-degree heat. That's talent."
A nervous laugh escaped Maya's throat before she could stop it. Suddenly her iPhone felt ridiculous in her hand, like a safety blanket she didn't need anymore.
"Maya," she managed, sliding into the pool without thinking. The cool water shocked her system in the best way. "And I'm not boring."
"Prove it." Riley's grin was wicked, promising trouble. "Race you to the other side. Loser has to—"
"Has to what?"
"Has to actually talk to people instead of living through that screen." Riley pointed at Maya's abandoned iPhone on the concrete.
Something shifted inside Maya. Maybe it was the water, maybe it was the challenge, but suddenly she didn't feel like a goldfish anymore. She felt like someone who could hold her own.
"You're on."
By sunset, Maya had lost the race, made three new friends, and somehow ended up with Riley's number saved in her phone. Sometimes the best things happen when you finally dive in.
