Goldfish in the Deep End

The pool party of the year. That's what Maya's Instagram story called it. And here I was, standing by the snack table in my oversized t-shirt, feeling like the world's most awkward human. I'd been running from my fear of water since the Great Fourth Grade Belly Flop Incident, but when your crush literally swims over and says hey, you can't exactly bail.

"Hey!" Jake said, dripping pool water. "We're doing a human pyramid for TikTok. You in?"

My brain short-circuited. Jake. Talking to me. While shirtless. The human pyramid — this towering structure of teenagers that would definitely collapse into chaos.

"Sure," I heard myself say, because apparently my mouth had a death wish.

The pyramid formed like a slow-motion disaster. Tyler and Amber on the bottom, then Jake and his friends in the middle, and somehow I ended up on top, wobbling like I'd had three espressos. The water reflected everyone's phones, a sea of cameras capturing my potential humiliation.

"LEAN LEFT!" someone screamed, and suddenly the world tilted sideways.

I hit the water perfectly, surfacing to someone's little sister holding a plastic bag. Her carnival prize — a goldfish — had escaped.

"Glub Glub!" she wailed as the fish darted away.

So there I was, swimming after this tiny orange fish while everyone else was just vibing. I finally scooped it up, handed it back, and Jake high-fived me.

"You literally saved the day," he said. "That's legendary."

Later that night, I couldn't stop smiling. Maybe facing your fears — even if they're dressed up as a ridiculous pyramid at a pool party — isn't the worst thing. Sometimes the best moments happen when you're just trying to save a goldfish.
